Holding to and passionately preaching the Doctrines of Grace.

We affirm each of
the cries of the
Reformation:

“Solo Christo”
Christ Alone

“Sola Scriptura”
Scripture Alone

“Sola Fide”
Faith Alone

“Sola Gratia”
Grace Alone

“Soli Deo Gloria”
God's Glory Alone

Shown below are a few
of the great and godly
men of history (along with several contemporaries),
who held (hold) to the Doctrines of Grace.

Some held (hold) differing views of the application or the implementation of these doctrines, so we're not saying we agree with everything each one stood (stands) for... but they were (are) all devoted to the basic tenants of the Historic Christian Gospel.

Doctrine ought to be a key part of any church.
What a church believes and teaches its members is vital.
Doctrine is important at GBC, so we thought you might
like to know what we believe and what we stand for.

Our Statement of Doctrine...

Grace Baptist Church holds to the Historic Christian Gospel. Teaching consistent with what Jesus preached, what was then amplified in the Epistles of the New Testament, held to by the early Christian church, and reclaimed and put forth once again through the Protestant Reformation. This understanding of the Scriptures is often referred to as: “The Doctrines of Grace” or Reformation Theology.

These doctrines are put forth in such documents as: The Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689,” which Grace Baptist Church recognizes as our Statement of Faith. We are not bound to this confession and it in no way replaces the Bible or the authority of Scripture. Rather, it is a confirmation of and an assistance to us in understanding our faith.

This booklet is a systematic outline of the Doctrines of Grace.
It is easy to read and its context quickly takes you to
the exact area desired for easy reference.
This site includes the Scripture references, which are, if you desire,
displayed on their own web page. As you read through this document,
you will find that it stresses the importance of understanding
the Scriptures and the necessity of a holy life for the believer.

An on-line version can be found in its entirety HERE.

We hold that the true church of the Lord Jesus Christ is composed of those whom He has brought to Himself through saving faith. The membership of Grace Baptist Church is and will strive to continue to be made up of believers in Christ, under His Lordship, who are in substantial agreement with the Historic Gospel.

The Importance of Doctrine...

Some say that they don't need doctrine, they say:
"just give us Jesus." Well, which Jesus?
The Jesus the Mormons teach?
The Jesus the Muslims teach?
Or... the Jesus the Bible presents?!
Without sound doctrine, people fall for anything.

Cults, like Mormonism, gain converts daily from so called evangelical churches.
How? Because rather than teaching their members sound
theology (doctrine)
from the Scriptures, churches focus on such things as entertainment,
leaving their members theologically ignorant and open to all kinds of error.
If you don't know the Jesus of the Bible, you're a target for cults!
Additionally...
If you don't know what the Bible teaches about worship...
how can you rightly worship God?!
If you don't know what the Bible teaches about love...
how will the church get along properly?!

What you believe is important...
your eternal destiny depends on it!
And, while almost all evangelical churches say that:
“They preach God's Word..."

The reality is:

There is seldom any in-depth exegesis of the Scriptures. Most of the time, you rarely even use your Bible. You hear little, if any, comparison of Scripture with Scripture and an understanding of Systematic Theology or Biblical Theology is unheard of.

Instead, you find a variety of "jokes," "stories," "lofty thoughts," "how-to steps," or "life application messages." Many churches boldly declare that they are founded on, and go by, recent best selling books written by famous pastors... conspicuously absent is any mention of their adherence to the Word of God!

The greatest concern of congregations today is: church growth. They think that “if the church is big, it must be right, it must be blessed of God.” According to their own standard, Jesus, who only had a handful of followers at the time of His death, was obviously not doing things right and was thus a failure.

We need TRUTH... not opinions!
We need ANSWERS... not entertainment!
We need SINCERITY... not phoniness!
We need GOD... not religion!
And... these come from doctrine!

Our Practice Based on Our Doctrine

We strongly believe in... and we are committed to the centrality of the preaching of the Word of God. Our reasoning is: the more one knows about the Word of God, the more they will know of the God of the Word! Then, the more one knows of the God of the Word, the more they learn of all He has done for them and thus, the more they will love Him for it. Then, the more one loves Him the more they will genuinely worship Him, live for Him, serve Him, give to Him and evangelize for Him. It all comes from the Word of God!

At GBC we strive to focus on Truth! Because God declares that He uses Truth as applied by the Holy Spirit to change lives. (Jn. 8:32)

At GBC the Bible is read, the Bible is preached from and the Bible is studied because only the Bible is absolute Truth! (Jn. 17:17) It is God's “self revelation” to us, His creation!

  • In 1 Cor. 1:18 the Apostle Paul says that: “The Word of God is... power to those who are being saved
  • And how will they get God's Word? Paul adds in Vs. 21: “...God was well pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.”
  • Again in Rom. 10:17 Paul says: “Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God” this too was in the context of the preaching! Paul had just said in Vs. 14 “...And how will they hear without a preacher?”

At GBC we’re not interested in "truth" as someone sees it; we want the Truth as God says it!

Thus, at GBC we focus on Exegetical and Expositional
messages, passionately preached from God's
Inspired, Infallible and Complete Word.

We believe that the King James Version of the Bible is a reliable translation and has been used by God for many years. However, we are aware of and reject the arguments of the King James only groups. Most cling to the translation, yet still miss the doctrinal Truth of what it says anyway. (Please do not call or write regarding this issue, as stated, we are aware of the arguments.)

The History of Our Doctrine

We make no excuses for being called Protestants, and holding to historic Protestant theology. This label stems from the Reformation, which had been brewing for centuries, but was launched into the open when, in 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany in “protest” against the tyranny of Rome with their false and pharisaical teachings.

Through these years the leaders of the Reformation, who were for the most part, leaders of local churches, through councils in the spirit of Acts 15, formulated and hammered out the position of the Protestant Church regarding church doctrine. Some may have differed on lesser elements, but all were agreed on the essential Doctrines of the Bible.

In the years that followed, after men like Luther and Calvin had gone to be with the Lord, there came many attacks against these doctrines that they risked their lives to defend and that the church held as sound. One of the most pointed attacks came from a man by the name of Jacobus Arminius. Arminius’ followers put forth what became known as the: Remonstrance of 1610. This “Arminian” view, which was boiled down to what were known as the five points of Arminianism, rejected much of what the Reformers held to and gave their lives for.

In response, the church fathers, convened the Council of Dort in 1618-19. They labeled the teachings of Arminius as heresy, and those who held to his doctrines as heretics who were subsequently put out of the church.

The Council also considered that it was necessary and proper to lay out what was considered sound Biblical Doctrine. So, to combat each of the five points of Arminius, they put forth the five points of the Doctrines of Grace. Here, they said, the church stands... here is what we hold to as Biblically orthodox theology. They named these fundamental Biblical doctrines after one of the great Reformers: John Calvin. The "Westminster Confession of Faith" and the "1689 Baptist Confession of Faith" were born out of these controversies and councils.

Through the years these doctrines have again and again come under attack. Yet until the mid 1800’s the Doctrines of Grace were overwhelmingly held to as Orthodox Christianity. It was at that time that the Southern Baptist Convention was founded, and the founders were likewise overwhelmingly men who held to these historic Christian doctrines found in the "1689 Baptist Confession of Faith."

In the late 1800’s further attacks came against Orthodox Christianity. The church once again began to downplay the need for sound doctrine and its importance to the church. The “Prince of Preachers,” Charles H. Spurgeon, who pastored the great Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, England, during this time, was a staunch supporter of the Doctrines of Grace. Pastor Spurgeon fought long and hard against this trend taking place in his day in what was called: the“Downgrade Controversy.” The church was engaged in the “dumbing down” of its people. In place of sound doctrine was this new “easy believism gospel.”

Unfortunately, the damage was done and the church was infected by false teaching. After the turn of the 20th century, it began to embrace all manner of false theology and considered it as acceptable. So much so, that today, the doctrines that were once preached and embraced as the true doctrines of the church, have all but disappeared. In their place, that which was condemned as heresy, is now commonly taught and practiced in the vast majority of Baptist churches. Even Southern Baptist Churches. Today, members of churches hardly know the basics of Biblical doctrine. Just as sad, because people are not taught church history, they don’t even realize that what they are now being taught has dramatically changed and has become basically the opposite from what was accepted theology and taught in churches barely 100 years ago.

Grace Baptist Church holds to the historic doctrines of the Reformation and rejects Arminianism considering it, as the Reformers did, heresy. Along with this false teaching, we also reject the practice of “easy believism” practiced in most evangelical churches today, with an invitation system that amounts to little more than “decisional regeneration.” It is a practice that robs God of His glory by promoting the role of man in salvation. In today’s gospel, man merely chooses God... makes a decision and God is obligated to respond. In the Doctrines of Grace, salvation is all of God, and He receives all the glory!

GBC further rejects the non-historic, modern day teaching of Dispensationalism made popular via the "Scofield Reference Bible." This false system of dividing the Bible also swept into the church due to the vacuum left when sound theology was removed.

"The Doctrines of Grace are not merely a system of theological truths, they represent the way a person views God. We see Him as the Majestic, Holy God, who is sovereign over every area of creation and life. The Doctrines of Grace assure that only God receives all the glory for creation, revelation and salvation. The Arminian teaching, so popular in the church today, represents the view of a god other then the True God of the Scriptures!” MCH

Though we may be in the minority of churches
holding to these doctrines today...
we are certainly not in the minority of church history.
